OCN 201 - Science of the Sea, University of Hawai`i at Manoa:
OCN 201 is the introductory undergraduate oceanography course at the University of Hawai`i at Manoa. The course, a multi-disciplinary presentation of the marine environment, consisted of a lecture component (up to 350 students per semester) and laboratory components (7-8 groups meeting once a week). While a Head-Teaching Assistant, (Spring 2002, Fall 2003, Spring 2004, Fall 2005, Spring 2006) I coordinated the activities of the teaching assistant group (6-8 persons), drafted lab preparation and field trip schedules, planned exam administration, exam grading and grade allocation, managed the course office operation and maintained the laboratory infrastructure. In addition, I personally taught one of the laboratory sections, prepared laboratory exercises and activities, conducted field trips, and designed and maintained a web-site with supplementary material for the students, which I also did during Fall 2001 when I was a Teaching assistant for the course.
OCN 628 - Benthic Biological Oceanography, University of Hawai`i at Manoa (Spring 2003):
as an invited lecturer to this graduate biological oceanography course, I presented selected lectures on sulfur-based chemosynthetic biomes, and the significance of dissolved organic matter uptake in marine benthos.
CHE 134 - Introductory
Chemistry Laboratory, Stony Brook University (Spring 1999):
I served as the instructor of the second-semester Introductory Chemistry Laboratory (20 students) for undergraduates, which focused on two major objectives: key laboratory practices and management, and basic chemical reactions and preparations.
MAR 101 - Long Island Sound:
Science and Use, Stony Brook University (Fall 1998):
I served as the teaching assistant for this introductory undergraduate course on marine science and marine resource use. I assisted with lecture presentations and examination grading. I planned and conducted field sampling expeditions and subsequent laboratory work, and assisted students with field observation and sampling, geological and biological sample processing, species identification, data processing and report writing.
Research advising
Research Experiences for
Undergraduates, Stony Brook University (Summer 1999, Summer 2000):
I counseled undergraduates participating in two U.S. NSF-funded Research Experiences for Undergraduates summer programs, helping them plan a 6-week research project in a field of marine science, execute it, and present the results in a written report and an end-of-program research colloquium.
On-line instruction
Course webmaster and web designer, Department of Oceanography, University of Hawai‘i (January 2002 - May 2003):
I designed web-sites and instructed assistants on web-site development for educational purposes. The developed web-sites included on-line aids for courses (e.g., Science of the Sea Lecture and Laboratory, Global Environmental Change Discussions, etc.), as well as degree and certificate programs (e.g., Global Environmental Science, Graduate Ocean Policy Certificate).
Tutoring
Master Tutor Program,
College of Arts and Sciences,
University of Miami, Florida (August 1995 - May 1997):
As a Master Tutor, I held one-on-one, out-of-class lessons with underprivileged undergraduate students for introductory and advanced university courses in biology, chemistry, physics and mathematics.
